Matthews Steakhouse - Winter Garden Village

Added: Nov 11, 2019
Category: Restaurants

Have you ever taken a trip down SR 429 to the shops at Winter Garden Village? If so when you have finished your shopping have you struggled to find something a bit different from than the usual chain restaurants? Next time why not take the 10 -15 minute drive to Downtown Winter Garden and explore its selection of locally owned restaurants and stores.

We recently visited one of them, the family run Matthews Steakhouse.

Matthew and the family are of German descent and all work in the restaurant, with Matthew circulating around the dining room, his father Horst doing all the cooking and Gabi (mum) prepping in the kitchen. It is located at the top end of Plant Street, the main street, across from the Crooked Can Brewing Company, a local craft brewery serving beer and wine, ideal for a quick drink after that long drive. We made prior reservations, which I believe are required, arrived a few minutes early and were seated immediately.

The restaurant has a relaxed and elegant feel and you are not rushed in the way you are at the chain restaurants. The service is personal with the staff checking on you on a regular basis. The food is cooked on a cherry and Oakwood grill in the front of the restaurant with the booths that overlook the grill being very popular. There are several cuts of steak available and they range in size from a 6oz Filet Mignon up to an 18oz Porterhouse, along with pork, chicken and seafood options. We did notice there was not a great vegetarian selection with just a couple of salads listed on the starters as the only option. I suppose if you go to a steakhouse you shouldn’t really be thinking of anything other than meat though!!

For our starters we chose the French Onion soup (delicious) and also the Goulash Soup (even more delicious) and it came piping hot and in a timely manner. The steaks were cooked just the way we ordered them and came with a side salad and baked potato along with a homemade sour cream sauce. They
did try and tempt us with some of the homemade desserts but we were full and declined. The restaurant offers a range of domestic and imported beers and wine but no spirits.

The steaks are priced higher than the chain restaurants but offer decent value for money. We would recommend a visit if you are in the area and maybe suggest a walk down the main street after your meal to view the other restaurants and shops available. Perhaps a drink at the rooftop bar, above The Whole Enchilada Mexican Restaurant, now that we are in the cooler Winter months could be the order of the evening?
